Q: Bi- polar??
Does anyone else agree with me that these days people seem very quick to self-diagnose themselves with bi-polar?

People seem to have lost the reality that everyone has mood swings and that is normal part of life. The mood swings of bi-polar are far more extreme and debilitating yet these days, especially amongst teenagers, so many people are calling themselves bi-polar without even a diagnosis from a psychiatrist.

Have others noticed this?

I have had bi-polar for 20 years now and I am in and out of psych wards and sometimes I wish I could tell these young kids what its really like and they would soon change their minds about whether or not they are bi-polar. I think we need more awareness that its ok for teens to have mood swings and that it does not equate to bi-polar.

Do others agree with me?

A: As someone who lives with Bipolar Disorder (but is well treated for it and can somewhat manage the issue) I was diagnosed around the age of 13, and I remember being a teenager and HATING my disorder. It wasn’t cool when I was a teen to have problems like that. I was in and out of hospitals, shrink visits twice a week, medication. Etc, etc. I felt like a total freak.

When I was that age I wanted nothing more than to be like kids who didn’t deal with this issue. Now I get so frustrated, because every moody teen thinks he/she is Bipolar.

Parent’s aren’t much better, I know so many parent’s who the minute their kid starts acting like….a kid. They assume their rebellious teen is really just bipolar.

It’s pathetic.

thanks !
and btw she doesn’t have addictions to sex, drugs, alcohol etc etc

A: There is no cure for Bi-polar there is only management. It is a difficult thing to deal with. Just be patient with her.

Q: Bi-Polar…?
What are signs of Bi-Polar disorder?
My dad has it and I think I might as well.
and Is it something you can grow out of?
ok.
i dont OFFICIALLY have it.
I think I might have it.
please tell me the signs of the disorder.

A: I was once bi-polar. I was told I was bi-polar when I was 21 yrs old. I was put on meds for about 5 yrs. After that time I decided to stop taking the meds to conceive my daughter. I’ve never went back on the meds and its been 10 yrs. I’ve never had a problem. But Bi-polar signs are depression, mood swings, ups and downs, racing thoughts, high or low sex drive, money problems, etc.

Q: ?? Bi Polar ??
My boyfriend is extremely bi polar. refuses to get medical help! what can i do?

A: Well, you need to set some boundaries. If his behavior is affecting you, you need to state that you will no longer see him until he gets medical care.

Tough love sometimes works. If you are unwilling to do that, chances are he will not get help until he gets arrested, hurt, or hurts someone else….if he is that out of control.

Q: Bi-polar??
Whats the youngest age a child can be diagnosed as bi-polar?? My son displays many of the traits of it, but has been diagnosed oppositional Diffiency Disorder. He is just 7 years old, but his mood swings for happy to angry and if anything bad happens he will fret over it for days and blame himself.

A: It is unusual for a child to be diagnosed as bipolar, as children have poor impulse control and mood swings NORMALLY. Children have been diagnosed with it though, so if you do suspect, it’s worth discussing it with your doctor. Giving him the label unneccessarily may be damaging, but obviously if he needs treatment, get it.

Q: Is bi polar disoder linked to the left and right brain?
I have bi polar disorder i think. There is a test onine with a spinning dancer (search left right brain on google first resut) that detemines whether you are left or right brin dominant. During episodes of mania the test howed me to be hugely right brain dominant and at normal times i am left dominant. Is this a coincidnce or are the two linked?

Also is there anything i can do to treat my condition other than mood stabilisers?

A: hey. I watched the dance, and at first i saw it go clockwise, then wen i looked back it was going anit… hmmm…i dont think its really thing.
Watch the dancer longer and you will see that it stops.

Q: What is exactly Bi-Polar and what is the best medicine to take for it?
I am Bi-Polar and have not taken any medicine. I want to get better and need some good advice to battle this monster.

A: Are you really bipolar or is this just another story you are making up?

I take something like this very serious since my brother is bipolar…You’re like the boy who cried wolf…how can I believe you now?

For someone who has never read any of his posts in the past, let me fill you in on some:

You mention that your wife isn’t leaving you because of the affair you had 2 weeks ago…You mention you love your wife and want to make your marriage better but then go on to write about that she is not pretty and that you are not turned on anymore…In fact you called her a ““Bull dog”…and still trying to figure out why you married her in the first place…”

Then you talk about how your wife caught you in bed with her daughter (guess that’s the affair you’re talking about?!?)…don’t think so since you said you were both drunk and it just happened…plus you said your wife should be mad at her daughter for instigating it…

…and of course we can’t forget that you had an affair with your College Teacher back in 2000 and now she’s claiming her little girl is your child…

…and then you have your wife’s friend living with you (which makes your wife nervous) because her friend already came out in her pajamas…something you mentioned because you had to really work at staying focus on your wife you said…

and then there’s you being all concerned that your wife hasn’t made love to you for two weeks…You think she’s having any affair because she is always tired…then answered it that she was only tired and had sex that night…

I don’t know why I’ve read all your posts but I have…but now I don’t know if you are joking or not and this is such a serious subject :(

Q: What are my changes of developing either bi polar or depression?
My aunt, my dads sister has bi polar. My sister had serve depression. My parents are mentally abusive and my mother has been physically abusive. I think I have something but I’ve never gone to the doctor about it.What are my changes that I do have something? Is it more like that I do or don’t? If I do it can be taken care of with meds or something right and people don’t have to know?

A: bi polar has the highest rate of corrdorince with genetics out of all of the mental disorders, even then its only around 70% likely. Depression is also passed down but not as genetic, only around 14% or so.

Q: My bi polar disorder is making me want to drop my college classes, what should i do ?
It’s getting to the point where my bi polar is controlling my life and is making it miserable, it tortures me with mood swings and hearing voices. It’s been a year since i graduated from high school and i keep on delaying going to college. What should i do ?

A: Go to a doctor and get treatment for it…

Q: I have sleep apnea,bi polar, personality disorder just put in a appeal with si am I wasting my time?
I just received my 1st denial letter from ssi. Do you think I have a chance with sleep apnea,bi polar, personality disorder, panic attacks and I receive lots of meds for these conditions.

A: Can”t say if your wasting your time or not, however I do know that SSI ALWAYS denies you the first time around. Its procedural. My Father In Law suffered a massive stroke and through the process I found out that they always do that.

Q: How likely is it for our children to be bi polar?
I know that bi polar can be genetic. My husband is bi polar, does that mean our future children will be too?

A: According to a medical journal by Stephen Soreff, MD, first-degree relatives of a person who has bipolar disorder 1 (BP1) has 7times more chance to develop that disorder compared to general population. Also stated in the medical journal, the offspring of a parent with bipolar disorder has 50% chance to develop another major psychiatric disorder.

In conclusion, your children may or may not develop bipolar disorder/other major psychiatric disorder. We can’t really know for sure.

Q: Bi-polar treatment along with hep-c treatments, do they both work?
I will be beginning treatments for hep-c, I would like to hear from other people who are bi-polar.

A: I’m not bi-polar, but I have a fair amount of experience with hep c education and treatment. You will have to have the bi-polar disorder under control first. Then you will have to be monitored closely for depression when on treatment. A side effect of interferon is depression &/or suicidal thoughts, so adherence to your medication for bi-polar is essential. It can be done, but you have to work closely with your doctor & psychiatrist, and you have to be honest about your side effects. Best wishes to you.
BTW, I’ve been cleared of hcv for 8 years now.

Q: What kinds of medicines are prescribed for bi-polar disorder?
What are the best bi-polar meds out right now? Do they work, are the side effects worth it and if YOU take them, have you taken other meds that did not work for you?

A: Each person reacts differently to medication. So i can have side effect on one of the meds but you don’t have any on the same med…But i can’t count the meds that i have tried right now i’m taking Topamax,Wellbutrin,Seroquel and i seem to be okay for the moment. And i haven’t had any side effect what so ever from any of them.

Q: How do you know if you are bi-polar without going to a doctor ?
Is there a sure-fire way to know if I am bi-polar without seeing a doctor ? Thank you for all of the serious answers.

A: You need to be seen but some signs are racing thoughts and up for days almost like if you were on drugs, think that people are talking about you paranoid are a few you also have anxiety and you get depressed.

Q: What are the chances of your children to be diagnosed with bi-polar if you are a sufferer?
I understand that if you are bi-polar there is a 2 in 3 chance that a close relative of yours does aswell. Does this mean that if you have children that there is a 2 in 3 chance they will develop it? Or is it completely random?

A: Bipolar is genetic. Chances are if you are bipolar, someone in your immediate family has bipolar. But it does not mean that your children will be bipolar.
