Q: What are some natural remedies for depression?
I know exercise helps, any natural methods and foods that can have a mood enhancing effect?
I’d highly doubt that woulBrazilian Ju Jitzud be possible, I study both Aikido and Brazilian Jujitzu, but if you see me one day you’re free to take a shot :)

A: I went to a health food store for stress and depression and an herbalist recommended 3 things that she uses and they have made a remarkable difference in how I feel. Rhodila 300 (root), B-complex, and Fish oil gel caps. It has been three weeks and I feel like a new person and was able to control a very bad habit that was causing me big problems.

I have tied all kinds of other things and never felt a difference, the difference I am feeling now feels like a miracle. I have also been listening to hypnosis CD’ which I think helped but when I started taking the supplements I noticed a remarkable difference.

Q: Any natural remedies for depression?
Does anyone know of any natural remedies to combat depression? I don’t want to get on any type of prescription drugs. I know my depressions is caused by chemical inbalances, so I would like to use natural things. Any sugestions?

A: Oh my goodness, there are so any things you can do. Not all will work for you as everyone is different. I have tried all of these, and found some more effective then others. (I have a hormonal imbalance.)
Some sort of physical activity, which give you endorphins.
St. John’s Wort, Lemon Balm, Siberian Ginseng, Dandelion, Damiana, Epimedium.
Also, you might have a nutritional shortage, so a multi-vitamin may come in handy to replenish yourself.
If none of these work, don’t give up. There’s so many options available to you.

Q: Does anyone know of any natural remedies for depression?
The “drug” route is a last resort scenario… are there any herbs or natural supplements that can be useful in combating depression?

A: This isn’t a herb, but it is a chemical which is a precursor to help produce more endorphins. It’s L-Phenylalanine, an amino acid which is the chemical mirror to the artificial sweetener
R-Phenylalanine. I could not stand Prozac so I found this helps a lot.
Then there’s chocolate. Real chocolate or Cocoa. One of the few really good things which also has several health benefits including combating depression.
Oh, and don’t watch the news. I know several people who got all involved with Scott and Lacy Peterson and the girl who went missing in Aruba. They would tune in every night for their dose of depressing news and internalize someone else’s problems. We don’t know these people and their problems are not really part of our lives unless we let the news make it part of our lives.

Q: Natural depression remedies ?
I’m not severely depressed….just a mild lethargy and lack of interest in pretty much everything for the last year or so. Are any of the natural and/or herbal mood enhancers any good and, if so, which ones ?

A: In order of strength:

St. John’s Worth (works for some, but all)

Valerian Root (works good for many)

Kava-Kava (takes a week before effects kick in)

Salvia (tricky)

K2 Herbal Mix (can only be smoked, so that’s kind of a drawback, though there’s no nicotine or tobacco in it or any other carcinogens)

Wild Kratom (most potent, simply amazing, however, there’s a HUGE difference between different strains and types, so go for the Xtreme kind, it’s the one that really works, pricier than others, but absolutely worth it)

Q: some natural or healthier ways to combat my depression?
i’ve been dealing with my depression for about 8 years now. i’ve been on many, many medications, and i haven’t been able to find one that really helps me without some horrible side affect. i’m not really interested in putting more poison in my body. i’m trying to research some natural depression remedies. does anyone have an ideas, or something that worked for them?

A: it’s tough, I know. Have you tried:

St John’s Wort,
Exercise,
acupuncture,
tryptophan,
low fructose diet,
Omega-3 fatty acids,
extra Zinc, Magnesium and inositol (Vitamin B-8), flower remedies, meditation, reike, religion, sleep, cold showers, music therapy, back massage, counseling.

There you go, I hope something here helps you.

Q: What are some good natural remedies for depression?
I’ve been on Celexa and I’d like to try something natural. Anyone have good suggestions, recommendations, or personal experience? I’d like to find something that doesn’t require a prescription.
Thanks,

A: I have heard that St John’s Wart is good. Also, make sure you get out of the house for a bit everyday. Sunlight tends to help. Make sure you get some exercise, which releases endorphins-the feel good neurotransmitters. I have also heard that eating fresh fruits and veggies and less processed foods helps to lessen depression. Good luck!

Q: What are some natural remedies to treat depression and Insommia?
I am looking to ween off my treatment (Medication) that the doctor (GP) has recommended me and I am looking to treat my depression and Insomnia naturally, and my body isn’t reacting well with my medication so I am going to try ween my way off the medication.

Have you gone natural for you depression and Insomnia?
If so what natural products did you use and was it successful?
How long would you have to take the product/products for?
Other information: I also have anixity as well.

A: St. johns wort worked for me for the depression. You can pick this up at any drug store. Try working out for the insomnia. Usually if you work out 3 times per wk your body will allow you to go to sleep easier.

Q: Are you aware of any natural remedies for depression?
Many doctors are so quick to prescribe pills to treat a chemical imbalance. I believe that there is such a thing as chemical imbalances, but I think there should be a way to heal without attacking your kidneys and liver with terrible anti-depressants and/or anti-psychotics. Please only SERIOUS answers are requested here.

A: The above herbal treatments do claim to be helpful with depression, but are still processed through the liver and kidneys. Also, because herbal remedies aren’t as well tested and regulated as medications, you can never be so sure about the potency and quality of the product you purchase. In addition, I have seen reports warning NOT to combine herbal and prescription medications. Talk with your pharmacist about possible issues arising from the substances you are taking and possible combinations — include herbals, prescriptions, over-the-counter, as well as caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and any illicit substances you might use (even if only occasionally).

Prescription medications are not “terrible” they allow MANY people with serious mental and emotional conditions to lead productive lives. The problem is that many people in the Western culture want an easy, quick-fix – a magic pill – to make their problems go away. The emotional lows that accompany difficult times in life usually did not appear overnight, nor will they resolve that way. It takes emotional and/or behavioral work to recognize how things got the way they are and to forge ahead to build a better future.

Many people swear by the natural endorphins that are released naturally during long periods of exercise (e.g. “runner’s high”). Of course physical fitness, adequate hydration, proper nutrition and ample rest are the best foundation for health and well-being.

Q: Natural Remedies for Depression?
I know exercise helps, but what if you can’t shut your brain off to sleep at night and end up staying awake all night? I haven’t found a drug yet that helped with the depression enough to endure the side effects most drugs have. Any more natural remedies to help with depression, anger, anxiety, etc? I don’t want my kids to remember mom being angry and having a short temper all the time.

A: First, you have to identify the source or cause of your depression and frustration.

Do you have two or more kids? Is their discipline bothering you? Do you have a set routine in the home, so they can leave you alone sometimes to attend to your chores, pastimes? If you watch the SUPER-NANNY tv series, you know what i mean.
Or is the house-work excessive and killing you? Think of ways to organise both house-work, kids and maybe your full-time job, etc to reduce the stress.

At the same time, indulge in a hobby or two. Spend the week-end taking the kids out, maybe with another relative or two. With things organized you should be able to catch adequate night’s sleep of 6 to 8 hours. You and your kids should see a new you within 30 days. Dont be surprised! Just takes a little creativity and organizing. :-) )

Q: Have you used natural remedies for depression? What are some great fixer uppers?
I have a client who is just staring…she’s a bit blue… my friend is a bit ‘unresponsive’…. is a good word. She just experienced a shock in her personal life. Any help with natural cures for depression as she does not want to take any over the counter drugs…
ok I am just talking about natural remedies for depression Cowboy doc…none of the anti-depressants that have extreme side effects..this is a temporary depression I have seen it in her before…she is looking up counselors in her area..of course that’s about a hundred bucks a week here…I am her peer not her counselor.

A: I can maybe give you a website to check out, but I hate getting violations for Spam and Advertisement when people like yourself ask a legitimate question on where to go for help. Herbdoc.com is a fantastic site, after 11 years, I have not had any sickness or depression and their herbs work for me. I don’t advocate this site anymore because of the people who want to do something to help themselves, but do not want to use herbs. Instead if it isn’t drugs I get a violation. This is the only site I use. If it isn’t for you, please don’t give me a violation, I am just trying to help.

Q: Natural remedies for depression?
A loved one suffered a very traumatic experience recently. He is very depressed and i would like to help him without medicating him. He has never suffered from depression in the past so I would like to avoid pills like Prozac and Zoloft and stuff. I think they are effective for some people but his depression isn’t permanent and I would like to help him get thru it with more natural remedies. Vitamins and exercise and stuff to help him over this hump. Any ideas?

A: Stay busy, exercise, never be by yourself. Always hang out with your friends. Make goals for yourself and follow your dreams. If you are unhappy, do everything you can to change your life.

Everyone deserves to be happy.

Good luck.

Q: Does anyone have experience with natural remedies for depression /ocd/anxiety? I am aware of most everything?
Natural, but please tell me what has helped you all. Yoru experiences with natural remedies, I cannot tolerate ssris.
Thanks!
side effetcs of prozac are not right for someone with HEALTH anxiety.
Not into putting chemical things into m y body.. there are baaad side effects. SOmeone with HEALTH ANXIETY doesn;t need that! Makes me more anxious!

A: Do yourself a favor and listen to the med student. St. Johns wort has been shown in European studies to help with depression but you are talking about a major anxiety disorder complex. Please do not fuss around with your mental health. If you are seeing a general family doctor about anxiety/depression, etc., ask for a referral to a psychiatrist who will give you a proper evaluation and diagnosis and will work on giving you a medication that you can tolerate and will also give you or refer you to a therapist for behavioral and talk therapy. Both are important to treatment as is making changes in your lifestyle and doing some kind of exercise or routine to strengthen your nervous system ( practiced an aerobic form of yoga). I beat anxiety disorder/depression and other related problems through just behaviorial therapy and many lifestyle changes but it took a very loooong time to get over the physical symptoms. If I had to do it over again, I’d probably take the meds too.

Q: depression . natural remedies please help?
im depressed. for no reason really.!! well like im having problems with my boyfriend not major problems but hes just not as perfect as he used to be and i do blame myself. dumping him is not an option as it would make me sprial into a deeper depression i love him alot!! im very dependent on him though and i think this is my problem. i want to be a stronger women. first i need to get rid of my depression. my doctor advised me away from anti depressents bcuz they are addictive . is there any natural remedies?

A: Becoming a stronger woman and getting rid of your depression will go hand in hand… you can’t make depression vanish, you’re probably depressed because of your relationship problems and being too dependent (just going on what you said, I’m not sure how dependent you are or anything) So when you feel better about yourself and stop blaming yourself, you probably won’t have problems with depression.

I’d really suggest you talk to a counselor, they really help! You can ask your doctor about it, or contact your local mental health agency for some suggestions.

You can also try some of the things in the website I list in my sources, but counseling will help better and faster than trying to do it on your own.

Q: Are there any Natural Remedies for Depression?
Are there any vitamins/supplements that combat depression? I have been feeling depressed since August for no apparent reason.

A: B vitamins, SAM-e (sort of expensive, but very effective and quickly), 5-htp (the precursor to serotonin, but the supplement will not give you the side effects of an SSRI), taurine, l-tyrosine. The first 3 I listed are the best.

Q: Are there any natural remedies for depression?
i have heard of omega three fatty acids and the b vitamins.

A: You have heard correctly.

People who eat some fish regularly are sharper and less depressed.

Unfortunately fish are becoming both costly and they are disappearing, like cod (one of my favorites).

If you cannot afford fish more often, you CAN afford fish oil capsules, a daily one. An occasional nip of cod liver oil was a staple from grandmother-of-older-answerer’s point of view. Still available, anyone can buy.

The B-vitamins are a part of most daily vitamin supplements.

The one assisting depression most is B6. But there is an analogous one that works more directly and reliably for depression:

It is called SAMe. s-adenosyl methionine, something like that, thus the abbreviation. For depression you take 400 mgm twice daily. After a month that can be cut back to 400 mgm once daily.

SAMe is NATURAL. The prescription remedies are UNNATURAL and have SIDE EFFECTS, often dangerous. Especially in combination with other unnatural drugs.

So it is good to stick to fish oil, SAMe and natural things which have no dangerous side effects.

Only drawback about SAMe is that it is somewhat pricey for many people. If you cannot afford it, best alternative is to take additional Vitamin B6 along with your regular daily multivitamin.

Other things that work for depression are:

EXERCISE
FINDING GOD (my blog or Q&A helpful)
HOBBY with FRIENDS
BIKING
WORKING at something you like
WORKING with FRIENDS

In fact, the most enjoyable of all times for me has been working with people whom I respect, value and like.

The worst has been working in other places where there are no such people. But I got through a lot of that, having God.

God did not create man to be alone. We all need others in our lives.

In some way. For an old man like me, I am satisfied to help others online.

But you are too young for that to suffice. You will need and will profit from a few good friends.

Become interested in something worthwhile and join a group. Mechanics, woodworking, bird houses, veterinarian assistant, whatever.

Girls seem to be better at this, but as a former medical worker I can also attest they have worse problems with depression.

Men get depressed in work situations where there are no women around (also know from solid experience). I do not know about vice versa, but suspect that may also be true, ask a female prisoner.

So men and women need each other, not just for sex.

Men and women are complementary, like love and wisdom.

So if your hobby or group involves both, that will be significantly better.

But you will improve by finding out more about God in a direct relationship.

My blog and Q&A show how to establish a direct relationship, results from God — not from me. You find out for yourself that way.

And it is REAL, not just being a follower of some minister or just a member of some church.

That is what God wants: A real relationship with you as your Heavenly Father, also through Christ and The Holy Spirit.

You can delve in my Q&A or blog, but you will need to really dive in and work about there.

All in one place, what else could you ask for?

BTW, I did lots of medical work so you can rely on the natural remedies part.

Found God a necessary part of natural remedy while doing years of medical work.

Often the key to really helping, the power by which everything else works at all. Drink more water, too!
